REEL DESCRIPTION

TITLE OPEN: P. PERRY-BURGESS     ILLUSTRATION  DESIGN  ANIMATION

♦ LETTER BOXED BACKGROUNDS / CLIENT: VERIZON:  Loop-able segments for back-projected effects: on-stage speaker support at corporate event featuring live action and laser effects.  MY WORK: From Client supplied 2D hard copy art: I built 3D animated models and re-created the swatches for 3D texture mapping. Images were rendered to on-site stage dimensions with careful attention to live performance lighting conditions.

UNDERGROUND BURIAL CHAMBERSCLIENT: DISCOVERY TELEVISION:  Segment appeared on Discovery Network series “Hidden Places.” Animation matched into and out of client’s Beta SP footage of Italy’s famous underground burial catacombs. MY WORK: Supplied with blue print floor plans and basic camera moves, I created the 3D models, arranged source-matching lighting and textures, and animated fly-thru.

NEANDERTHAL MAN SEGMENTS /  Client: NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TELEVISION: Worked with a team of artists, Nat. Geo. and several universities to create a graphic intensive documentary. Starting with basic Viewpoint models of modern man and skeleton: we cut hierarchies apart, restructured and often rebuilt models to aid application of materials and animation.  Using the most recent studies/theories we modified skeleton and flesh to Neanderthal dimensions. Rotating Skulls: MY WORK: Materials, Texture, Lighting, Animation. Modified second skull to Neanderthal studies. Neanderthal Man: My Work:   With team of artists: Modeled face to match my underlying modified skull. Modern Man and Skeleton/Muscle movement:  My Work: Rotoscoped animation of spear throw from video footage, organized and rebuilt parts of skeleton, textured, lit, animated.

MILITARY WOMAN SOLDIER: Pen & Ink storyboard illustration (see next segment description….)*MILITARY EQUIPMENT /  Client:  MIN WASHINGTON NEWS TELEVISION:  Utilized blueprints and JANE’S military encyclopedias, numerous consultations with former and current Pentagon military analysts for reference in modeling and animation of present day and future conceptualized weaponry. MY WORK: Entire animation, art direction for all production backgrounds and virtual environments, contributed models for other artist’s scenes.

SPACESHIP and EXPLODING PLANET  / Client:  VERIZON: Animation for Verizon Corporate Convention: depicting a MCI one-man “battle sprite” on a covert corporate bombing raid against the AT&T “death star”. Client Provided: The Concept. MY WORK: Entire animation (design, storyboarding, 3D modeling/shading/texture maps, animation of elements, objects, camera, lighting, rendering, and editing.

SPORTS PINBALL MACHINE  / Client:  COMCAST/HOME TEAM SPORTS:  :30 second program open for cable sports network. MY WORK:  Co-conceived, co-wrote successful bid. Once production was underway: I art directed entire project (including intermixed live action sequences), executed additional boards when required, aided in supervising freelance staff and supported production as a 2D texture map artist and researcher.

NEWSEUM NETWORK NEWS / Client: NEWSEUM NATIONAL JOURNALISTS’ MUSEUM(Journalists’ Museum location: Washington, D.C.):  With a team of artists designed and executed program opening for museum’s on-site studio news broadcasts. Designs inspired by museum’s on-site Journalist Memorial. MY WORK: Designed and applied glass and metal materials/textures, captured footage/still photography of historical news events and applied to panes as still and animated texture maps. Animated camera and aided in designing/organizing sequences for editing.

SATELITE ANIMATION  / Client: LOUISIANA-PACIFIC PR:  Animation appeared in fifteen minute PSA explaining LP’s environmental policies.  MY WORK: Built the Lan-Sat 5 satellite using NASA art and blueprints. Entire production Art Director: executed entire satellite animation,  various animated charts, graphs, simulated satellite photo enhancements, lower thirds nd moving soft masks as needed by on-line editor.

“TO THE CONTRARY” PROGRAM OPEN / Client: PBS (PUBLIC BROADCASTING):  Original opening animation for early seasons of award winning PBS women’s news commentary/talk show.  MY WORK: Concept, boards and preparation of texture maps. (Less than a year later a similar design style and concept was adopted by ABC network’s DayOne).

“THE PEOPLE AND THE POWER GAME”  /  Client: HEDRICK SMITH PRODUCTIONS and PBS: Open and bumpers for two-part series examining the inner workings of Capitol Hill from the POV of politicians, lobbyists, media and constituents. Collaborated with series host and book author, Hedrick Smith during early production stages.  MY WORK: Boarded and executed senior art director’s ideas and assisted on his bid presentation. Constructed, lit, textured, animated, rendered and recorded puzzle model. Contributed to program’s 2D charts, graphs, and video sales promotions.

TAXI:   Pen & Ink Character concept design sketches for children’s series pilot.

DUCK ANIMATION /  Client: HOT SOURCE MEDIA STUDIOS: IN HOUSE Title: “Can’t Fly—Don’t Ask Me.” Short animated piece about a flightless mallard that “goes Hollywood ala Fred Astaire” after failed attempts at flight. Short used in numerous company demos of character design/animation and bids for children’s programming contracts.  MY WORK: Entire concept and animation.

CLOCKWORK USA / Client:  THE BBC & MIN WASHINGTON NEWS:  Untitled pilot for morning “Americana” news show for overseas Middle East countries. Program format involved current news interspersed with live studio segments from Washington, DC. The large orbiting “shell” and bkg color changes simulate earth’s rotation night to day–symbolizing US and Middle East time differences and ever changing news events.  MY WORK: Concept and entire animation.

BOY & GIRL: NO SMOKING / Client:  AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY:  Character designs for :30 PSA.  Elementary/middle school students from around the country recorded readings from their own essays/scripts. Professional studios donated their artists and facilities to illustrate the sound bites and produce :30 PSAs to be aired nationwide during children’s programming spots.  MY WORK: Spot Producer, production designer and artist. Directed edit and audio sessions.

WARRIOR ANIMATION /  Client: HOT SOURCE MEDIA STUDIOS: IN HOUSE:  Sequence produced in-house demonstrating character design/animation and exploring channels control and shrink wrap modeling.  MY WORK: Ink & wash storyboard illustration, Entire Animation and editing.

3D MACHINE / Client: FAST CUTS STUDIOS, INC: IN HOUSE: Segment introducing 3D work on company demo reel.  MY WORK: Concept and entire animation.

HISTORIC SLIDE CAROUSEL /  Client:  MIN WASHINGTON NEWS TELEVISION:  Middle-East documentary “Arabica” depicting the history of the Arabic people from early tribes to modern kingdoms and governments.  MY WORK: The tent environment, interior lighting, scanning/prep 2D images and textures.

CITY FLY-THROUGH  /  Client:  BELL ATLANTIC:  Collaborated with a close team of talented animators. Art Director was an experienced architect/CADD operator and therefore it should be noted that most of our building models were based on famous ancient and modern structures around the world. This fly-thru was one in a series of six—each emphasizing a different neighborhood in the Bell city. MY WORK: Modeling streets, benches, lamp posts, trees, mailboxes, fountains, commons, designating assignments to art staff, researching municipal features for added reality, cleaning model hierarchies, developing and testing 2D textures, trimming databases, archiving, notating client supervised sessions, and placing neighborhoods.

PHYSICIANS’ DC CONVENTION OPEN/LOOP / Client: GREAT FALLS PRODUCTION:  Sequence looped daily on convention floor’s closed circuit television. Client desired a “Flame/Inferno soft composited look” When this resource became unavailable—I was asked to take on entire production and simulate desired look in SOFTIMAGE 3D. Client was very satisfied.

EARTH VIEW DECK   / Client: NAUTICUS: NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM:  Museum location: Norfolk, Virginia. Client supplied blueprints for museum exhibit which allows visitors to view films from a raised deck.  My Work: Modeling, lights, textures, camera movement.
